Why Intermittent Fasting is so Easy and Effective

Intermittent fasting works wonders for those looking to lose weight. In fact, it’s probably one of the easiest and more straightforward weight loss plans out there. As long as you adhere to your fasting and feeding window, you can rest assured knowing that big changes are on their way. Not only does intermittent fasting transform your body, but every aspect of your life will change once you adopt this simple way of life. 

Here’s why intermittent fasting works so well for weight loss:

Total Body Reset

As a society (America, I’m looking at you!), we have been conditioned to stay in a fed state for far too long. Our solution to everything tends to be to add. More more more! 

“What goes up must come down” “the yin to my yang” balance is part of life. And when you’re overweight, there’s an imbalance going on. For me, the scales tip heavily on the excess, and I’m not just talking about food.

Up until recently, my solution to every problem was to add something to it. Money, stuff, food, drugs, smoking – go ahead and throw social media in there too. I was on a ferocious adding spree, and seemingly nothing could tame my insatiable hunger for more. In fact, my need for more was increasing at an exorbitant rate.

It wasn’t until I discovered the art of subtraction that the weight lifting began off my shoulders, both literally and figuratively.

From a purely scientific perspective, this makes total sense. Our bodies were designed to go long periods without food. This whole 6-meals-a-day thing is garbage, and the “evidence” supporting this advice stands on very dubious grounds.

↳ Why Intermittent Fasting Works: The Science

Our bodies have two states: the fed state and the fasted state. The fed state = high insulin levels, and the fasted state = low insulin levels. Unless you are eating VERY few carbs, your insulin levels will remain elevated for a few hours after eating, keeping you in the fed state longer and preventing your body from tapping into fat sources for fuel. 

If you are eating meals every few hours, your body will never have a chance to dip into the fasted state (aka fat burning zone) longer than a couple of hours while you sleep. 

Intermittent fasting disrupts this system and throws you into fat-burning mode without even changing your diet.

Slay the (Addiction) Dragon 

I find that when there is no room for bargaining or mental gymnastics – combined with the knowledge that I will soon have the chance to eat to full satisfaction – I am able to release the obsessive and disordered thoughts surrounding food that tend to dominate my life when there aren’t clear boundaries.

It can be painful to clear the clutter, especially in the beginning. Often it’s a matter of simply ripping off the bandaid and knocking out the dreading day 1’s (and day 2’s and 3’s – but it gets MUCH easier over time!) 

Build confidence in yourself one day at a time. It’s that simple.

Flip the Switch on Autopilot With Intermittent Fasting

A watched pot eventually boils, but it’s still boring as hell to watch. So as the old infomercial suggests, it is much more effective to simply “set it and forget it!”

Intermittent fasting is hands down the easiest way to flip this switch on autopilot and clear your mental space of any obsessive or anxious thoughts surrounding food and weight. 

Mentally – This diet will change your brain in powerful and noticeable ways. The manner you think about food will change, your relationship with hunger will transform, and your entire outlook on life will shift – all thanks to this new and improved way of life.

Physically – Luckily, intermittent fasting isn’t what most people would consider a “slow and steady” approach to weight loss. On the contrary, the results will show themselves pretty quickly, and most new fasters will literally see their body transform mere weeks into their fasting program.

Emotionally –  This is where the real magic of fasting comes into play. When eating isn’t your go-to “fix” for all of your problems (boredom, stress, joy), you are forced to shift the focus elsewhere, often uncovering some pretty harsh truths about not only yourself but your entire life. 

Spiritually – If you don’t consider yourself to be spiritual or religious, prepare to dig deep – because when you bring intermittent fasting into the picture, there’s no running from the truth.

Often, being overweight is a symptom of something greater. There is cognitive dissonance in your life, usually some painful realities that you are avoiding. Intermittent fasting works to help fix these problems.

Bottom Line:

When you follow an intermittent fasting schedule, you can rest assured knowing that as long as you follow the one basic rule of the plan (adhering to your fasting schedule), you can do pretty much whatever you want and remain confident that you are headed in the right direction. 

Make success a matter of habit and not a battle of will.

Most of us don’t handle unlimited choices well – nor do we enjoy having decisions made FOR us. The key here is to limit your own options.
